Terminology
Observed Turbulence
Turbulence reports left from recording devices with SkyPath.
Turbulence Polygons
A planet-wide aggregated turbulence area polygons. Used to show turbulence areas worldwide without fetching too much data.
Route Corridor (Polygon)
Route corridor polygon is a geo-fence area to fetch data inside only. Use your route line coordinates to create a polygon with some width distance (50-150 NM is good).
Viewport
A viewport is a polygon of a visible map area in the app to fetch the right data when it's needed.
History Time
It determines the data history to be fetched from the server. So if it is set to .twoHours for example (the default one), there will be no data locally available for more than 2 hours ago.
Turbulence Notifications
A notification or an alert that some observed turbulence is reported ahead of the route or a beam mode based on the configuration relative to the current location.
Nowcasting
Nowcasting (aka Nowcast) is turbulence prediction data issued by SkyPath.
Nowcast data is issued hourly for up to 6 hours forecast.
H3 resolution 5 is used by SkyPath for the nowcast area. Each nowcast item covers ~252.9 square km hexagon area (as per the H3 resolutions table) and 1000 feet of altitude. Each hexagon is connected to the other so this allows for covering the area better. So one nowcast item covers for example FL370..<FL380
or FL380..<FL390
.
H3 Hexagonal Indexing
H3 Hexagonal Indexing is a geospatial indexing system that divides the world into a hierarchical grid of hexagons. This system efficiently manages and queries geospatial data, providing a scalable method for spatial data representation and analysis.
Live Flight
A live flight is a flight with the SkyPath app or SDK running on the iPad. When the device records data, the live location is periodically tracked and sent to the server. The live flight report consists of the aircraft details, coordinates, and other data.
